How does the ranking work?
Each player has a score, starting at 1000. A higher number indicates a better player, based on their results against other rated players.
The winner of a contest between two players gains a certain number of points in his rating and the losing player loses the same amount. The number of points won or lost in a contest depends on the difference in the score of the players, so a player will gain more points by beating a higher-rated player than by beating a lower-rated player.
If you are interested in the math behind the system, there is a detailed article on Wikipedia.
Why is this better than other ladder systems?
- It's easy to find an even match - just look for players you have around 50% chance of winning against.
- There is a build in "handicaping" system that makes it possible for players to play anyone without strange effects on the ranking.
- The ranking is more stable - letting players gradually work their way to their place on the ladder.
